The Satyr

  • Leaning into his walking staff and staring into the misty woods from the edge of the village, Ven was quite the oddball among satyrs. He was never satisfied, as his expertise in language and archery had no practical usage in The Violet Gardens. Yearning for a purpose was only the beginning of such enticing wanderlust. The remainder of the allure was born from an adoration of fantasies starring brave heroes and elegant princesses. The world was much bigger than the woods! At least, according to the books he read. All he needed was a reason to leave.

    Something prevented him from venturing out on his own. A handful of years ago, Ven's health took a sharp decline. What started as a light cough soon consumed every aspect of the once-proud satyr's life. Now he was feverish, aching, and on some days, he could scarcely stay upright! The disease was of magical origin - unidentified, incurable, and uncontagious as far as they could tell. Adjusting to these new restrictions was a humbling experience.

    Despite it all, his chipper attitude was more unshakable than ever before. Ven was often described as far too trusting, inquisitive to a fault, but also compassionate and gentle. Some accused him of being exceedingly chatty! Routinely more concerned with the welfare of his people than his personal well-being, it was clear that Ven did not fear death. Although, he did fear the pain that it would bring when his lungs dissolved into ash.

    Instead of adventuring, Ven spent the majority of his time reading foreign books, studying languages to near fluency, and sharpshooting with a longbow. When he was tired of such solitary activities, inspiration came from his friends in the village. Ven's preferred arts were sculpting, painting, and composing music. He could hardly comprehend math or science; even the smallest show of technology or magic would leave him astounded and more curious than ever, though he was hopeless in learning its secrets.

    Ven never discarded a gift, and this sentimentality was evident in his home. Shelves upon shelves were stuffed with knick-knacks, some of them two decades old. Wall hangings, jars of feathers, and candles that had partially melted onto the wooden furnishings solidified the "packrat" impression. Home was a place of introspection - the perfect setting to be surrounded by tokens of love and appreciation.
